April 1, 2020 .... Transitioning Committee Report

Greetings! Silverton FCC Family from your Congregational Transition Committee   Over the next 12-18 months the Transition Committee's role is to:

  • support the congregation and serve as a source of communicators as Steve concludes his ministry
  • work with the Regional Minister, Cathy Myers Wirt, through a process to select and support interim pastor/s during the interim period
  • to support the congregation and the newly selected minister once the new minister is installed

In  an effort for full transparency, we will be sharing our process with  the congregation as it is currently set and as it unfolds.  In essence,  for this process, we are conversation conduits and committed to keeping  the process flowing.    Below are the steps we will be following between now and the end of summer, with potential dates for completion:

  • Form Transition Committee ✅
  • Regional Minister to orient Transition Committee - completed March 27
  • Transition Committee meet with Pastor(s) to create current list of staff responsibilities - finish by April 15
  • Create an Interim Staffing Plan - finish by May 10
  • Create a Congregational Profile for hiring interim staffing personnel - finish by April 15
  • Assist in the calling of interim staff using process in congregational governing documents
  • Complete call by May 30 with August 15 to September 1 start date, depending on schedules
  • Make  sure a farewell celebration is planned and accomplished set date and  form leadership team right away. Hoping for party late June early July
  • Make sure the office is prepared for interim pastoral staff needs with appropriate resources - completed by July 15
  • Make sure the appropriate leaders and pastor have a copy of "Closing a Pastoral Ministry" document

Our  next scheduled meeting to discuss the Congregational Profile is  Tuesday, March 31.  In addition, we will meet again with Cathy on April  7th to begin discussing the next items on the list.

This  team is happy to serve our congregation in this time of transition.  Please keep us in your prayers as we work to make this transition as  smooth as possible for all involved.  Expect regular communication  through email and our monthly newsletter to keep you informed.

Be well,

From the February 1, 2020 Newsletter and "Welcome" on the website

So I announced retirement.  It will begin  July 1st,  Lots of mixed emotions.  Sad, and excited.  The unease of  unknowns, yet trusting in God.   But that's several months away.  Right now I am mostly thinking about...

  • Next messages from Jesus' Sermon on the Mount: "Centered", "Relationships", "Just Do It".  I love, love, love these challenging core teachings of Jesus.
  • Holy  Land trip prep is getting exciting.  We are 26 in number, got the group  together recently, and another meeting to come.  There's room for a few  more, however we are told there are very few Passion Play tickets  available, so if anyone wants to sign up, this is the time.
  • Second  Hour classes:  In Betweeners adult group meets in my office with Sarah  Elder, and I hear they have all kinds of fun and great discussions.   Don't miss it! The "less young" adults meet in the Fireside Room, and we  have a couple more sessions on holistic health with Jennifer Stevens,  then will shift to Love Languages.
  • There's a rumor (OK, it's more than a rumor...my wife says it's true):  Little Kid's Choir is coming. Yay!
  • Nick  Robinson is "back in the saddle" as Lay Minister to Seniors.  He had  this role years ago, and is well suited to it. A people person through  and through, he will be available to help with rides to church and  visits with those in various need.  Thanks Nick!
  • Cherry  Hoffman continues in a similar role. She is a Commissioned Minister,  with a focus on ministering to seniors, Wednesday Community Dinner  hosting and supervising seminary students, working with homeless and  sheltering needs, and Silverton Hospital volunteer chaplain.  Thanks  Cherry!

Joy, Pastor Steve
